Gaming to Keep Fit, The future of Work Outs?
There have been many things to blame for the UK’s increase in child and adult obesity. One of the main industries to receive criticism was the gaming industry. One major misconception was that young children and teenagers remained indoors glued to the newest computer game, rather than playing sports, and going out in their spare time.

In fact, the gaming industry has moved forward and adapted to make Gaming and Fitness work together. Gamers are well suited to fitness regimes as they have determination to overcome obstacles, excellent at problem solving and can focus on tasks for weeks at a time.

To encourage exercise and a healthier lifestyle balance, the gaming industry is now creating games and fitness apps that encourage movement, exercise and going outside, from the release of Pokémon Go where gamers had to explore outside to find characters, to Sim 3, where your virtual health and personal fitness are linked. To move up levels within the game, your actual real life fitness needs to improve.

These games not only encourage exercise but also reward the gamer, in moving up levels and rewarding the gamer for each goal reached it encourages more exercise and better lifestyle choices.

Interactive gaming apps like Zombie, Run, Ingress and The Walk are becoming ever more popular. While the apps take the gamers through multiple tasks, like escaping zombies (while running a real-life route), looking for survivors, to saving the world through walking through clues and routes. The apps track actual movement and footsteps with some routes exceeding 5K, to a gaming app that is completed by walking the equivalent distance to that of the UK.

Now this year, in the US, the gyms are starting to catch on to the profitable way of making fitness fun for the gamers, too.

Exergamer, is a new gym where fitness classes are actual games, from dancing games, cycling games and active wall games. The gyms concept is to merge technology, gaming and fitness in one place, to add fun to fitness for all ages.

Asphalt Green, another gaming gym in New York, is an arcade style gym. When entering the bright fluorescent gym, the walls and floors respond to touch and movement. The work outs are mainly aimed at high intensity interval training and creates a fun, dynamic and hard core work out, boasting to burn 1000 calories per session.

Although there is nothing quite like an arcade style gym in the UK yet, it probably won’t be too long until the UK catches up.

Gamification in industries and merging technology and sports has been present for years. Only now has it become accessible for all to enjoy at any age.
