What is a superfood?
Although superfood is not a scientific term it generally applies to foods that are packed full of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and antioxidants. It has been recently reported that black pudding is now thought to be a superfood.
Black pudding has received the superfood status due to its high levels of protein, magnesium and potassium. The superfood is also almost carbohydrate free and is rich in zinc and iron.
Due to its reported popularity, there has been an increase in people including the superfood as part of a healthy diet.
With all the nutritional benefits listed above, it would be understandable to think of black pudding as a healthy meal option.
However, even with the high nutrient content, it is still a processed food. Processed foods are foods that contain additives in order to preserve them.
